Apartment refurbishment

The project changes the way of inhabiting an apartment from the end of XIXth century in Barcelona’s “Eixample” through small alterations, transferring the importance to the existing elements; maintaining, modifying and making the most of them to create new spaces.

The project is a comprehensive refurbishment of a XIXth century Barcelona’s “Ensanche” apartment that hadn’t had any major alterations during its 100 years of history.

The ceilings (with their original moldings) and the pavements (hydraulic tiles) were pretty well conserved as well as the original carpentry.

The project’s starting point has been preserving as much as possible the original layout in order to keep the ceilings and the floorings, and concentrating the needed modifications that the new program requires in those spaces that didn’t have these features.

We worked room by room, adapting the new program to the layout marked by ceilings and pavements. We kept all the carpentries, either in their original position or moving them to new spaces opened in the flat’s interior building, where a new open kitchen and a bigger bathroom are created, keeping the floors and the courtyard windows in their original position.
